Hulu and ESPN will debut “Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl,” a documentary about the King of Pop’s 1993 Super Bowl halftime show, in February 2027.
Release date
The documentary is set to debut in February 2027, according to Variety. An exact day has not been announced at the time of writing.
What it is
“Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl” chronicles the singer’s landmark performance during the 1993 Super Bowl halftime show at the Rose Bowl. According to Variety, the film follows Jackson as he prepares for the performance and features never-before-seen footage of Jackson and his team, documenting how he “catapulted the Super Bowl halftime show into the single biggest spectacle in pop culture.”
The documentary is directed and produced by Bao Nguyen, who also directed the “We Are the World” documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop.” Variety reports it is produced by Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach and Lauren Gaffney for Skydance Sports, and by John Branca for Optimum Productions.
Variety notes that Jackson’s set helped turn the halftime slot from a “largely skippable intermission” into one of television’s most-anticipated events. Before Jackson, the show was typically headlined by marching bands and past-their-prime artists; after him came acts such as U2, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé and Bad Bunny.
- Setlist (per Variety): “Jam,” “Billie Jean,” “Black or White,” “We Are the World,” “Heal the World”
- Venue: the Rose Bowl, site of the 1993 Super Bowl halftime show
Where to get
The documentary will be available on Hulu and ESPN. Hulu’s announcement said it is “coming February 2027 to Hulu on Disney+ and ESPN.”
