Sony has unveiled a new black PlayStation 5 — but there is a catch. The PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black launches on November 19, 2026, and it is limited to Japan: buyers elsewhere cannot use it.

The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black goes on sale on November 19, 2026. Pre-orders open in Japan from October 20, 2026 at PlayStation dealers and online stores, according to Sony's Japanese PlayStation Blog. The recommended retail price is ¥55,000 including tax. A matching "Disc Drive Midnight Black" also launches the same day. ComingSoon notes it is the first time Sony Interactive Entertainment has offered an official black variant alongside the standard white model.

What it is

The new model is a black-cased PS5 Digital Edition — a disc-drive-free console with an 825GB SSD. Sony says it keeps the PS5's core features: ultra-fast SSD, 3D audio, PS4 backward compatibility (some titles are unsupported), and the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Buyers can add a separately sold disc drive to play physical games; a vertical stand is also sold separately.

The catch is availability. Sony's own blog states the console is for use in Japan only and works "only with PlayStation accounts with the console language set to Japanese and the Country/Region set to Japan." Fans outside Japan cannot buy it or sign in with a non-Japanese account — a limitation widely criticised on Reddit and ResetEra, where users questioned why Sony would not sell a black PS5 worldwide.

Where to get

Orders are handled by Japanese PlayStation retailers and e-commerce sites from October 20, 2026. No release outside Japan has been announced for either the black Digital Edition or the black Disc Drive model, so international buyers currently have no official route to purchase. The standard white PS5 remains the only model Sony sells in most markets.
