Russian strikes hit key power plant in Kyiv, Zelensky says

Weather · 14 Oct 2026

A key energy facility supplying Kyiv with heating and electricity was hit in a Russian ballistic missile strike late on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. The strike on the Darnytska CHP-4 (CHPP-4) plant and a residential building came with "no early warning from our partners", he added.

What's happening

  • A key energy facility supplying Kyiv with heating and electricity — Darnytska CHP-4, or CHPP-4 — was hit in a Russian ballistic missile attack, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
  • Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one person was killed and 13 injured in a strike on an apartment block late on Tuesday; four people were in a serious condition, he said.
  • Zelensky said the strikes came with "no early warning from our partners". He added: "It is important that the world does not stay silent about this."
  • It was the second night in a row that Kyiv has been hit by Russian missiles.
  • The strikes came two days after US President Donald Trump said an energy ceasefire had been agreed by Russia and Ukraine, although Kyiv reported multiple Russian strikes following the announcement.

Which regions are affected

CHPP-4 provides heating and electricity to Kyiv's Dniprovskyi district and parts of the Darnytskyi district, the BBC reports. The plant has been hit multiple times during the war; it was severely damaged in a separate Russian missile attack in February this year, which forced it to shut down, according to the BBC.

Zelensky warned on Tuesday evening that Russia was planning further strikes with ballistic missiles, telling Ukrainians: "Please take care of yourselves tonight and tomorrow."

Precautions

  • Follow local air-raid alerts and official guidance from Ukrainian authorities.
  • Zelensky urged Ukrainians to take care on Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

Status

On Tuesday, Trump denied that US intelligence sharing with Kyiv had stopped, saying: "We are helping them and we are sharing intel." The Guardian reports that US officials had made explicit threats over the weekend that the Trump administration was on the brink of halting intelligence sharing with Kyiv. Zelensky said his military had not struck Russian oil refineries or energy facilities in the two days after Trump's Sunday announcement, while the Kremlin had ignored the "ceasefire" and continued to bomb Ukraine's energy infrastructure, the Guardian reports.
